10 Reasons to Send the Perfect Greeting Card

This may be stating the obvious, but I love sending cards. Given who I am, that’s to be expected, but let me convince you too.

Sending a card is a way to show someone you’re thinking about them, or you wish them well, or you’re proud of them. It’s thought-provoking and meaningful; people spend time and emotional energy on choosing the perfect card for their loved ones, and I think that’s amazing. Receiving a card gives you a fuzzy feeling knowing you’re in someone’s thoughts – and that’s what it all comes down to. In times like these, adding some positivity into someone’s day and giving them something to smile about is more important than ever.

With each passing day, it becomes a little easier to become detached from the people we care about. Work is crazy, the kids won’t give you a break, you got a new phone and lost all your contacts. Whatever the reason maybe, now is the time to stop making excuses and reach out. Sometimes an email, text message, Facebook post or tweet just doesn’t cut it. Fortunately, the lost art of establishing a real human connection isn’t dead yet. Put it on paper. It doesn’t take much effort to send someone a handwritten card or letter, and there’s certainly no shortage of reasons to do so. Here are a ten less obvious ones.

1. To Make a Real Connection

Your personality shines through when you actually write something with a pen. This could be to do with the fact that you can’t draft and re-draft when making your mark on a card. You can tap out a WhatsApp message, delete it, re-write it, delete it again, and so on. However, when you place that first scribble on a greeting card, you are committed, and you can’t go back and change what you have written or stamp out all the personality from it. Usually, your first thought is the one that makes that real connection, and not your endless careful editing.

2. Give Them Something to Open on Their Birthday

Many of us rely on Facebook to remind us of people’s birthdays. We fire off a short message to their wall and that’s that. But no one is going to remember fondly the time they spent scrolling their Facebook messages on the day they turned 30.

One of the reasons to give a greeting card is to gift your friend or family member the chance to open something on their birthday. The physical action of tearing open an envelope and revealing the card within is much more satisfying. This is especially important given the rise in popularity of gifting experience type presents. Without a real birthday card to uncover and hold, the recipient may not have anything to open on their big day.

3. Thank you (for being awesome).

Do you really need a gift to thank someone? Maybe they’re just awesome and you really appreciate their existence. Why not thank them for just being them?

4. New neighbors!

It’s not easy being the new folks on the block. Why not welcome them to the neighborhood?

5. Valentine’s Day

Ok, so not so unconventional. But nevertheless — a great reason to send a card indeed.

6. Getting Your Kids to Write on Greeting Cards Develops Communication Skills

Your kids get to hone their patience whenever they sit down and organize their train of thought before writing that birthday greeting to their cousin or holiday message to Grandma. Writing on greeting cards can also help improve their penmanship.

7. A Greeting Card Can Complement a Gift

A card that matches the themes or designs of gifts for special occasions adds a "Wow!" factor, making the recipient feel extra special.

8. Greeting Cards Are a Reminder of Joy

The physical card also acts as a constant reminder of joy for the amount of time your loved one displays it. Every time they walk into their living room, they see the collection of greeting cards that reminds them they are loved. Facebook posts slip down the timeline within hours and are soon forgotten. A display of cards cannot be ignored and that is why it’s so important to send a greeting card.

9. Show Someone You Are Thinking Of Them

You do not even need a special occasion in order to send a greeting card. To go out of your way to buy a card, write in it, get hold of a stamp and send it, shows that you are really thinking of the person you are sending it to. You may just have found a design that you think the other person will enjoy, it could be that they need cheering up, you might simply want to reconnect after not talking for a while, but the fact that you went above and beyond a text message shows the other person how much you care.

10. Give Them Something to Keep

Finally, one of the best reasons to give a greeting card is that the recipient can keep it forever. Yes, you could store a text message on a phone, but the likelihood of it being deleted or otherwise lost is far greater than if they place a greeting card in a treasured safe place.

How often do you find yourself scrolling through old WhatsApp chats where the conversation has accumulated three hundred additional messages since? Much less than you do looking at physical objects that you have collected over the years, I would bet.

Phew. That’s a lot of great reasons to send a card! Do you have any to add?! Tell us in the comment section 🙂
